HAPS has participated as an official Run for a Reason charity in the Chevron Houston Marathon as one of the original charities since the program started in 1994. Dedicated runners, walkers, fundraisers, donors, and supporters work hard to raise awareness and valuable funding for HAPS by donating funds, creating a fundraising page to share with friends and family, participating in the full marathon, half marathon and/or 5K races, or by cheering for and supporting race participants. Special events have been vital to Houston Area Parkinson Society fundraising since it was founded as an all-volunteer organization in 1974 and began raising funds to support programs and services.
For the 28th consecutive year, HAPS participated as an official charity in the Chevron Houston Marathon’s Run for a Reason Program. On the weekend of January 15, 2022, more than 250 walkers, runners, volunteers, and supporters came out for this event! Despite cold and windy weather, TEAM HAPS showed up to raise support for HAPS and awareness of Parkinson’s disease.
This year’s theme was Slow and Steady Wins the Race – afterall the Parkinson’s journey is a marathon and not a sprint. It is a disease to be managed over many years utilizing a steady management strategy that involves a team approach to care and support by incorporating knowledge, wisdom, positivity, creativity, and community. HAPS is there for every step of the journey. The 2023 race prep has already started. That’s right you can join TEAM HAPS now for the 2023 Marathon, Half Marathon or 5K!
By using a whole-human approach to community building, HAPS reduces the fear and isolation associated with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Since 1974, we have offered free therapeutic exercise and support groups, social services, and education to families affected by Parkinson’s disease in eight Houston-area counties. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still working diligently to serve our Houston Parkinson’s community. Proceeds from the Team HAPS 5K will help fund these services.
Thank you to our community for making this possible.
