HAPS is kicking off the 2011 marathon season! For 15 consecutive years HAPS has been chosen as an official Chevron Houston Marathon Run for a Reason charity. It may feel like the January 30, 2011 race is far away, but like living with Parkinson's disease, training for a marathon requires patience, planning and determination to go the distance. Whether training for a marathon or living with Parkinson's, no one can do it without the support of others. Without the support of so many people, last year's marathon wouldn't have been the huge success it was. Last year our $25,000 goal was met and exceeded as we raised a total of $56,150; our best year yet! This year our goal is $50,000, HAPS is certain we can surpass last year's success becuase the services are needed more than ever.

HAPS is pleased to have one of our top 2009 and 2010 Marathon fundraisers, Fred Stephens, return as this year's Marathon Co-Chair. Special thanks to Fred for leading the way again this year for what is sure to be another stellar event. With gratitude we thank our official Marathon T-shirt sponsor, Sterling McCall Acura, for its commitment to this event for the second year in a row and to Wartsila for their renewed support as a Sidewalk Squad Sponsor at the Olympian level.

Registration for the 2011 Chevron Houston Marathon officially opened Tuesday, July 27, 2010. You can register the Chevron Houston Marathon and the Aramco Houston Half Marathon now through August 12, 2010. This year's race registration is being done through a lottery system. Each person who registers regardless of date or time has an equal chance of being chosen in the lottery. For those who want a guaranteed entry you can either become a HAPS HERO through the Marathon by making a tax deductible donation on $350 plus the cost of registration or participate in the HAPS Fundraising for Registration program. HAPS has 10 full and 10 half marathon entries available through the Fundrasing for Registration program. If you would like to know more about this program, please contact the HAPS office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Even if you decide not to participate in the full or half marathon there are many ways that you can participate including:

  • walking or running in the 2011 EP5K which opens for registration in September 2010.
  • volunteeing to help at the race day Hoopla Station, the after race party tent in Charity Village at the GRB and with speading the word about HAPS and its participation in the Marathon.
  • setting up a fundraising page and using the Marathon as a way to raise money by having people donate in your honor. The best part is you don't even have to lace up your tennis shoes to do this!

Whether you run, walk or cheer from the sidelines, we hope we can count on your participation again in 2011 to raise Parkinson's awareness and money to support the programs and services offered by HAPS. We look forward to welcoming back all those who have participated in previous years and to working with all of our new walkers, runners, fundraisers and volunteers who have chosen HAPS as their charity of choice.
